Sammy tells Cassie that the children are waiting to be evacuated on a plane. Cassie considers sneaking onto the plane with the other children but discounts it; Evan told her about some escape pods they could use. However, she doesn’t know how to find the escape pods. Finally, she decides they must get out of the area. Cassie walks Sammy out into the corridor where they encounter a young doctor (Zombie). Sammy surprises her by running to the doctor and pulling his mask off, revealing Ben Parish. The younger explains their new names, that Ben is Zombie and he himself is Nugget. Ben tells Cassie that Vosch is the enemy, and she surprises him by saying she already knows. They decide to get Sammy out together.
Cassie and Ben quickly escort Sammy through the corridors. They pause when they’re some distance from other personnel to take the implant out of Sammy’s neck. When they begin moving again, they run into Vosch.
Vosch takes Cassie and Ben into an execution room. He shows them that Sammy has been strapped to a chair in the next room. He tells Cassie that he is going to hook her up to Wonderland and kill Ben, but he’ll spare Sammy if she reveals who helped her break into the base. She refuses, and Vosch pushes the kill button.
After Vosch pushes the kill button, nothing happens. He believes the person helping Cassie has gotten into the mainframe and will cut the power next. He leaves Cassie and Ben with two soldiers. Cassie sees a cockroach fall from the vent above Sammy as well as a shadow. She believes Evan is up there. She and Ben take out the two soldiers and Evan jumps down; he is introduced to everyone. Evan leads the group through the corridor and uses a small device to cut the power. He leads them to a stairwell and tells them to go up to the surface. He says they will run into debris but should be able to get through it. Evan says when they see the plane take off, they should run. Cassie realizes he isn’t coming with them; he plans to destroy the base.
Cassie, Ben, and Sammy make their way up the stairs and find the debris-filled halfway to the third landing. Cassie tries to climb it but falls. Ben decides to give it a try.
When Ben finds sunlight through the debris, Cassie puts Sammy on her back and carries him up.
Ben pulls Sammy and then Cassie up the last bit of debris. He says the entire camp is gone but can see the plane. They determine which direction is north and prepare to run as the airplane takes off.
As Cassie, Ben, and Sammy begin to run, the ground heaves with an explosion, causing Cassie to fall. Ben takes Sammy, and they continue to run. Drones begin falling from the sky, raining debris over them. Cassie spots a Humvee coming toward them and yells to warn Ben. A fissure opens in front of her, and she falls in. Ben puts Sammy in the Humvee and goes back for Cassie. He manages to grab her wrist and yank her forward with the help of a dark-haired girl—Ringer. They all run for the Humvee and take off, barely escaping as the fissure grows. Cassie looks up and sees a glowing object fly away from the base like a falling star.
The group stops beneath an underpass. Dumbo appears and tends to everyone’s wounds. Cassie is introduced to the rest of Ben’s squad—Ringer, Poundcake, and Teacup. She notices the apparent closeness between Ben and Ringer. But then, Ben comes to sit with her and thanks her for saving his life with a kiss.
After focusing on Ben in several lonely moments at the beginning of the novel, Cassie finally comes face to face with her crush. Ben has no memory of Cassie, but her crush remains relevant as she works with him to get Sammy out of the base. She doesn’t seem to retain strong feelings for him (or at least, not to the extent she did prior to meeting Evan), but he is familiar to her. He is a piece of her past that reminds her she is still alive and hasn’t lost sight of the person she was before the Arrival.
As foreshadowed earlier in the novel, Cassie and Ben run into Vosch again. Although they both have reason to dislike Vosch and want revenge, this is not the time to pursue vengeance. Vosch is still very much in charge and knows that neither Ben nor Cassie buys his people’s story as human militia. He’s also aware that Cassie had help from an Other in infiltrating the base. This suspicion—Evan’s promise to help Cassie—is confirmed for Cassie when Vosch attempts to kill Sammy and fails because someone has hacked the base mainframe. While this is the last time Cassie and Ben see Vosch, he returns in the following books of the trilogy.
Evan arrives and instructs Cassie and Ben how to escape, warning them to run as soon as they see the base plane take off. The tension is high as Cassie, Ben, and Sammy struggle to escape the underground building and find freedom on a surface that also begins to disintegrate. The climax of the novel is intense with the ground literally falling beneath their feet, but Ben’s squad shows up just in time to rescue them. This highlights the idea that humans working together are stronger than those who fight alone, something Cassie struggled with at the beginning of the novel. She though she couldn’t trust anyone and had to be alone, but now finds herself a member of a group that has won their first battle against the Others.
Cassie believes Evan died in the destruction of the base, but during the escape, notices a glowing object fly away from the base like a falling star. This suggests that Evan might have used one of the escape pods he told Cassie about; the Others’ technology is expanded upon in the following books of the trilogy. At the same time, Cassie revels in her victory: She fulfilled her promise to Sammy and enjoys an intimate moment with Ben Parish that she dreamt of since her crush on him in middle school. By the end of the novel, it is clear that her feelings remained intact despite their time apart, perhaps accentuated by his familiarity. Cassie notes Ben’s relationship with Ringer—but there is maturity in her assessment of their own shared moment that shows she has grown since those days. The children have all grown, a fact proven by their ability to think for themselves and work together.
